Prince of the Air

He moves in darkness, cloaked in stars.
He moves like shadow,
Weaving and twisting his way below the city lights
That pour ominous yellow pools into the silent streets.
Unheard, unseen, unknown he walks,
Kissed by the silver strands of evening rain.
His eyes are soft, but cold as the night;
His gaze sharper than the death angel's sword,
And his arms--deceptively strong...
The rainbow wings he wears by day are illusion,
They dissolve into mist at the first phantom of dusk
As grey clouds float down to crown his head.
Thus arrayed, he slinks away...
Fluid...sinister...
Toward the window, out of all the darkened windows,
Where I am sleeping innocent,
Oblivious to his breath on the fluttering curtains.

The Frozen Flame

The day the sun rose in the west,
I chose the worst, forsook the best.
The day the birds flew upside down,
And rain fell skyward from the ground--
I laughed until I had no tears,
And bravely faced them...all my fears.
The sun was dark, the stormclouds bright...
I slept the day and walked the night.
My hands, they touched warm, solid air,
That gave no breath as blind, I stared.
And the world spun backwards 'round the moon,
The stars went black and shone at noon.
My body hid inside my soul,
And split apart, yet remained whole.
I reached out across timeless hours;
Descended into lofty towers,
Looking for a sound, your voice,
But forced into a simple choice:
To give my lifetime just to die,
Or break my wings so you could fly.
So at the most, I said the least,
And cried as the sun sank in the east.

Midnight's truth

How far you have fallen, child of the light--
>From purest dawn to deepest night,
And shadow's whispers told in sleep...
No vows of virtue will you keep.
Oh, child of gold and radiant sun,
The battle's over, the enemy won.
And you, within your world of naught--
Shall nevermore your hopes be caught
In the misty web of silken dreams
As night clouds grey the moons white beams?
How far you have fallen, daughter of morn.
On wings of death your thoughts are born...
Still, and ever as the sun does set,
There will be no mercy; your soul won't forget.

Heartsong

Song of my heart, that once flew free
High over mountain and valley and sea.
Where has it gone, the melody fair
That once sailed high in the clear blue air?
I do not know, it slipped my sight
And drifted away, one starry night.
I raised my eyes and stood alone,
Where once a million songs had flown,
And other hearts that used to beat
Have taken now their last retreat,
Where songs now wave on other skies
That now escape my weary eyes.
I stand alone on empty ground...
How was I lost? Can I be found?
The answers drifted with the song,
And silent days are dark and long.
Hope is not lost, I look to the day
When songs return to take me away,
To other mountains and oceans and trees
Where all the pain will finally cease...
Yet 'til I reach that far-off shore,
Silence, my heart, and sing no more.
